Walking Tables for Events in London and the UK
Performers dressed as living champagne and canapé tables move through your guests, serving drinks and food while creating a talking point at your event.

Walking tables are costumed performers who carry a tray of champagne flutes and canapés and walk through your venue, interacting with guests. They work at cocktail receptions, product launches, award ceremonies, weddings and private parties across London and the UK. Most acts perform for 1 to 2 hours and suit venues with 60 to 300+ guests. Hire costs vary by performer, duration and location, typically ranging from 400 to 800 GBP for a single performer for one hour in London.

What a walking table performer does
A walking table is a costumed performer who becomes a mobile bar and canapé station. They wear an ornate costume shaped like a table, complete with a real serving tray laden with champagne flutes and canapés. Instead of guests queuing at a bar or standing near a static table, the performer walks through your event space, stopping to chat with groups, offering drinks and food, and taking photographs.
The act works because it breaks up the usual flow of a reception. Guests do not have to hunt for refreshments. The performer brings the refreshments to them, and the novelty means people talk about it. It is particularly strong at corporate events where you want to encourage mingling, and at weddings during the reception line or photograph time when guests are standing around waiting.
Performers are trained to work the room, remember names, engage with guests and adapt to the mood of your event. Some are theatrical and more showy; others are subtle and elegant. We match the style to your brief when you book.
2. Where they work bestWhere they work best
Walking tables suit any event where guests are standing or moving around during a reception phase. They are not a sit-down dinner act. Common uses include:
- Corporate product launches and brand activations
- Award ceremonies and gala dinners (during the cocktail hour)
- Wedding receptions, especially between ceremony and dinner
- Private parties and milestone celebrations
- Hotel or venue open events
- Networking events and conferences
In London, we have booked walking tables at hotel ballrooms in Mayfair and Park Lane, City livery halls, warehouse venues in East London, private clubs in Belgravia and Knightsbridge, and rooftop terraces across the West End. Outside London, the act travels to country house venues, marquee weddings in the Cotswolds, and event spaces in Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol, Leeds, Liverpool, Edinburgh and Glasgow.
The key is space and flow. You need room for the performer to walk without tripping over furniture or guests, and guests should not all be seated or crammed at a bar. A venue with a large entrance hall, garden space or reception area works well. Even a generous hotel corridor can work if guest flow allows it.
3. What you need to tell the agencyWhat you need to tell the agency
To get an accurate quote and find the right performer, tell us:
- Event date and time (start and end of the reception, or the hour you want the act to run)
- Venue name, town or city, and the type of space (ballroom, garden, outdoor marquee, warehouse, etc.)
- Guest count or expected footfall
- What you want served (champagne and canapés, prosecco, soft drinks, or a mix)
- The tone of your event (formal gala, casual wedding, corporate launch, private party)
- Any specific requests (a particular accent, costume style, or interaction level)
Let us know early. Lead times vary, but 4 to 6 weeks ahead is ideal for London corporate events and weddings. Shorter notice can sometimes be arranged if availability allows. If you need corporate entertainment for a larger team event or are combining walking tables with other performers, tell us that too so we can plan the full package.
4. Logistics and spaceLogistics and space
Walking tables are low-tech and flexible. The performer needs:
- A safe, clean route through your venue with no trip hazards or stairs (or a single-step platform if the table is lightweight)
- A nearby prep area to refill the tray with fresh glasses and canapés (a kitchen, bar or service room)
- Access to a fridge or cold store for champagne and perishable canapés
- A private corner to change into the costume (a dressing room, office, or curtained area)
Most venues have these facilities as standard. If your event is outdoors (a garden or marquee), the performer can still work, but the costume is heavier in heat, and you will need a sheltered rest area nearby. On very hot days, perform slots are usually shorter to keep the performer safe.
There are no noise limits because walking tables are silent performers. Curfews are handled between you and your venue. If your venue is a London hotel, a City livery hall or a licensed restaurant, the event curfew is theirs to set; we work within it. If it is your home or a private garden, there are no restrictions from us, but be mindful of neighbours if it is evening.
Your venue may ask for Performer Liability Insurance (PLI). We carry standard PLI cover of 6 million GBP, and we will provide a certificate on request. Your event manager or venue coordinator can ask for it directly.
5. Costs and availabilityCosts and availability
Costs vary by duration, performer experience, and travel distance. A guide for London is shown below. Outside London, add travel time and mileage; for example, a booking in Manchester or Glasgow will cost more than one in London.
| Scenario | Guide Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| One performer, 1 hour, London | 400 to 600 GBP | Cocktail reception or reception hour |
| One performer, 2 hours, London | 700 to 900 GBP | Full reception or split slots |
| Two performers, 1 hour each, London | 750 to 1,200 GBP | Larger venue or simultaneous coverage |
| One performer, 1 hour, UK outside London | 450 to 700 GBP | Includes travel to Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol, etc. |
These are guide ranges. Final costs depend on the specific performer, date, travel, and catering (whether we supply the canapés or you do). Availability is best from Tuesday to Thursday. Friday and Saturday slots for weddings and private parties fill quickly, especially in summer. Sunday bookings are possible but costlier.

FAQs about walking tables
Can I hire a walking table for a sit-down dinner?
No. Walking tables work during standing receptions or breaks in service, not during a plated meal. They are best used in the hour or two before dinner, or at a cocktail reception. If you have a formal dinner and want entertainment, we offer other acts like live musicians or table-side magicians instead.
What if my venue is small?
Walking tables need clear floor space and guest flow. Small venues with cramped layouts or narrow corridors are not ideal because the performer cannot move freely or pause to chat. If your space is under 50 square metres or guests are tightly packed, we will advise at quote stage whether it will work. Sometimes a single short slot (30 minutes) is better than a longer booking in a tight space.
Do you provide the canapés?
We do not. The canapés and champagne are sourced by you or your caterer. We provide the performer and the costume. Work with your venue or catering supplier to arrange a tray of 20 to 30 canapés and chilled champagne or prosecco before the performance begins. The performer will refresh from your bar or kitchen as needed.
What if the performer needs to eat or take a break?
Absolutely. For performances over 2 hours, the performer will need a 15-minute break to step out of the costume, drink water and rest. This is built into the quote and logistics. Longer events (3+ hours) are split across two performers or include scheduled breaks.
Will it work outdoors in bad weather?
The costume can get wet, but the performer inside cannot. If rain is forecast, a covered area (marquee, tent, or undercover garden structure) is essential. A light drizzle is manageable; heavy rain or strong wind makes the act unsafe because the costume catches wind and is harder to balance. We will advise on the day if conditions are too poor.
How far in advance do I need to book?
4 to 6 weeks is standard for London and the UK. Weddings and corporate events often book further ahead. If you are booking at short notice, contact us anyway. We keep a small availability window for last-minute enquiries, especially for local London venues. The sooner you get in touch, the better the chance of a confirmation.
